“Reading Holding Water and Deliveries"

with Nate Brumley with Dry Fly Innovations

Friday, March 20, 2:30pm to 3:30pm in Conf Rm 4

There are many skills in dry fly fishing that you must thoroughly understand. Two of the most important are reading holding water and then making perfect deliveries to where fish live. This video presentation takes you inside river structure and pinpoints the “hot zones” where you should keep your dry fly. The second half of the presentation illustrates how to make precise deliveries. Owning great dry flies is essential, but knowing how to deliver them is equally important. This is one presentation that you won’t want to miss. The concepts are cutting edge and the video is lights out!!

Nate Brumley is the owner of Dry Fly Innovations and author of two cutting-edge dry fly books: Addicted to the Rise and Winter on a Dry Fly. The only bugs sold at DFI are dry flies, and he’s mastered the use of them in all seasons over all bodies of fresh water. Nate has never sunk a nymph or fished a streamer. His offering is 60 plus years’ experience fishing a dry fly exclusively. His presentations are rich in dry fly technique that include video to connect the concepts. These lectures are some of the most sought-after events in the industry at present and his breadth of knowledge is truly phenomenal. It’s been said that one hour with Nate is like gaining 10 years of dry fly experience. Should you have the opportunity, attend one or both of his presentations …it will change the way you dry fly fish forever.

“Beaver Dam Analogs and Fish Movement: A Case Study from the Upper Willow Creek Drainage”

Saturday, March 21, 10:00am to 11:00am in Conf Rm 4

In the Willow Creek drainage (upstream of Ririe Reservoir), Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) and volunteers have built over 300 beaver dam analogs (BDAs) to replicate the effects natural beaver dams had on streams when they were common. Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout are present throughout the Willow Creek drainage and are among the most genetically pure population across their range. In 2025 , IDFG and Trout Unlimited initiated a study to assess how BDAs affects fish movement in the Willow Creek drainage, which will contribute to IDFG’s more longstanding assessment of Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout movement between Ririe Reservoir and Willow Creek.

Ben Martin is a fisheries staff member with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) based in Idaho Falls, frequently involved in organizing volunteer efforts for fisheries surveys. He coordinates field operations such as barge electrofishing surveys in the Upper Snake Region.
